Entering the UMANE experience - The Call for Applicants

If you are planning to be involved in the UMANE dual degree programme, and you are registered at one of the UMANE partner institutions, you should submit your candidacy during your second year of studies. Your application must be submitted to your local UMANE Committee. In the case the number of applications submitted exceeds the maximum number of planned students per year, the Committee will evaluate the applications and select the students on the basis on four main criteria, as listed below.

1. Motivation. UMANE students are selected on the basis of their motivation to undertake an international experience during their university studies. This means that applicants are examined (through a preliminary interview) as regards to: (1) their willingness to participate in the joint degree program; (2) the reasons that underlie their involvement in academic activities; (3) the goals and ambitions of students who plan to participate in the UMANE degree programme;

2. Academic career. Applicants who prove to be in order with their study programme in their own university will be privileged. In this regard, students who plan to participate in the UMANE degree program are asked to provide a detailed report on their academic carrier (i.e., number of exams passed, score obtained in each exam and current position in the degree program);

3. Language skills. To fully benefit from the UMANE international experience, students undertaking the dual degree programme must have basic language skills and a strong motivation while attending an international degree programme. Although a good language strategy has been planned to support the selected students, the specific linguistic skills required by students may vary depending on their origin. For instance, Italian and Spanish students must have a basic knowledge of English (pass an intermediate-level-test) to guarantee that they will be able to fully understand the courses attended at the US universities. Language skills will be evaluated through a preliminary written and oral test. Further language tests will be carried out before the students’ mobility periods, in order to be able to inform the receiving institution if some extra measures are to be adopted to increase the linguistic performance of the received students.

4. Diversity. The US partners will encourage women and minorities to take advantage of this program by including them in activities pertinent to the development of the programs and demonstrating the expected benefits of such degree to their future careers.

As mentioned, an appropriate Committee is appointed at each university involved in the UMANE dual degree programme to evaluate and select the applicants on the basis of the aforementioned criteria . Such Committees could also define the relative importance of the above evaluation criteria, as well as appropriate mechanisms to rank students against them.
