Language courses

A preliminary language plan has been already prompted in order to facilitate language integration of both EU and US students.

For EU students specifically enrolled at the UMANE Dual Degree:

  • A basic knowledge on English language is already foreseen at the start of the Bachelor Degree (pre-condition for selection);
  • Starting from their second year, EU students will be required to attend specific advanced courses of English language organized by the Language Centres of the two EU institutions (Parma and Extremadura). During these courses, students will learn both US civilisation basics and English for Engineering Studies;
  • Upon their arrival in the US, EU students will be assigned a local tutor who will be in charge of helping their integration process in the US institution;
  • During their stay in the US, EU students will also have the opportunity to attend the self-access language facilities available at the US institutions.

For US students enrolled at the UMANE Dual Degree:

  • Since transatlantic mobility from the US to the EU is planned during the third year in the order Parma + Extremadura, a basic knowledge of Italian language will be provided to US students during the second semester of their second year, in order to allow US students to arrive in Italy with some basics of IT language. This task will be accomplished by sending an IT lecturer to the US to teach Italian basics, through a grant given by the University of Parma.
  • After travelling to the EU, US students will attend their first semester in Italy. During this period their Italian language training will be furthered and an ES intensive language course will be given by an UEX lecturer hosted at UNIPR under the supervision of the University Language Centre and its qualified teachers. During this training, US students will also be allowed to freely attend the language Self Access Lab for both IT and ES languages learning;
  • During the second EU semester, namely spent in Spain, US students will further their Spanish language training organised by the UEX Language Centre and will registered at the local “Programa Tutor”, a specific programme for international students aimed at helping both linguistic and social integration.
  • During the stay in the EU, both in Parma and in Extremadura, US students will be assigned local tutors and mentors responsible for helping them in having a high performance under all aspects.
